ACA NEOGEO SAMURAI SHODOWN

I love this game! By far one of the most beautiful games in it's genre and arguably one of the best fighting games of all time. When SNK relleased Samarai Showdown for the Neo Geo home console it quickly sold more cartridges than any other game for the system and has a cult following to this day. Easily one of the best Neo Geo games ever and definately one of my favorites. 5 out of 5 stars.

Samurai Shodown is a game from a time when everyone was trying to copy the success of Street Fighter 2. There were a lot of clones, and most were not very good. Samurai Shodown was one of the good ones. It looked pretty, it controlled well, and it felt very different from SF2. Where Street Fighter presented a flashy, fast-paced & action-packed battle, Samurai Shodown offered something noticeably different. The battles were slower, with a lot of careful movement and defensive play, which would explode in moments of brutal, flashy swordplay before slowing down again as the combatants separated to collect themselves & plan their next attack. This ebb and flow encouraged a more measured approach. You'd study your opponent, look for opportunities, maybe try to lure them into making a mistake or goad them into rash action. Where so many games just tried to copy SF2, Samurai Shodown actually offered a complementary alternative. It's a good port, but only if you're nostalgic.
