Commander ’85
Ultimate Games · Action & adventure · Role playing · Simulation
13 May 1985: Today is my BIRTHDAY!!! Mum gave me the best present ever! a Commander 85 – a super modern computer with real artificial intelligence! It’s very smart, and I can talk to it and play games on it. I can’t wait till the other boys see it!
I like the concept of this game. But it just cannot be played without a M&K. Seems interesting but just not playable on controller when you have to manually type commands to do anything.

Taking Me Way Back
In January of 1987, at the age of 10, I was gifted for my birthday a used Commodore 64 with an external floppy drive and some books explaining how to code in Basic. Now its January of 2021 and I have had a career in computer programming for nearly 30 years thanks to all those very hot and humid late Bama nights during summer break I spent as a kid meticulously copying hundreds of lines of code from the various code books I would borrow from the library and to the thousands of simple programs I would write myself just experimenting with Basic. This game instantly brought me back to those simpler times and with such nostalgia I could almost feel the humidity pressing my clothes to my skin and hear the swarms of mosquitos rising from the swamp just outside my bedrooms open window. If you haven't lived a similar experience, this game is probably not for you, but if you've ever lived through a syntax error, this is your game.

No mouse and keyboard support?
Slow and awkward user interface using controller. This game needs keyboard support or a major rehaul of controller controls. Sad, I love the feel of this game and want to like it but its just too much of a struggle to play.

Frustrating to play on Console
Commander '85 looks like it could be a fun adventure game. The interface with the computer, however, is very frustrating to play on console. Even with a keyboard plugged into the console, entering commands requires pressing 'a' on the game pad to bring up the input dialog, then you can type one command. If a confirmation is needed (y/n) you again need to press a on the controller then you can type.
Even if the game were playable on console, it seems to have some annoying bugs. I tried exploring the room while the game was 'cracking' the password. When I sat back down I had to start the cracking process again. Failure to ask 'are you sure' before exiting also caused some lost progress.
Maybe the author can improve the input on console and make the game playable-or make the PC version available through play anywhere. Otherwise, unless you are very patient with a clumsy command interface this game won't get played. Maybe you'll read a book or something, and make mom happy.
