Before any more bad reviews get put on this dlc about how to get the companion, read the headline literally. Do the quest Making Friends, and you'll get your Companion. It's that simple.

Aside from a few different glitches and the increased chances of crashing in multiplayer, I'm overall fairly pleased with the companion update---and this DLC improves your companion's capabilities greatly. You can make your Runner stand out from the crowd with the combination of voice boxes, paints, and light kits, specialize your Runner's armor to better protect it from certain enemies, and---last, but most certainly not least---equip it with great extra support abilities. Of course, there are ways it could still be improved further. One improvement, in my opinion, would be if the modules and armor components would color match to the selected paint scheme. As it is, the armor tends to cover up and hide the paintjob, making everyone's unique Runner look a bit samey when up-armored...
