Gravitar: Recharged
Atari · Action & adventure · Classics · Shooter
A lone pilot, far from home, must navigate an abstract universe of uncharted planets and space stations guarded by mysterious, hostile aliens in Gravitar: Recharged.
This is the game that broke me...I loved playing it back in the arcade days and on the 2600, but I never really got good at it... you need to have incredibly steady hands, and the patience of a bhuddist monk to be able to truly master GRAVITAR. I always thought GRAVITAR was one of ATARI's most unique gaming concepts (aside from YARS REVENGE) back when it first hit the arcades, it didn't receive much praise back then which is why arcade owners were allowed to get conversion kits to change their GRAVITAR machines into BLACK WIDOW, it has since gained a cult-following. it was an amazing and innovative game with nothing else quite like it, this new version is just as awesome...and just as infuriatingly difficult...

Meh.
This was a quarter eater in the arcade as a kid, was hoping they would add something to it for a reboot 40 years later, but they really didnt. Game of super patience, one thruster tap too long and you are dead. Gives you a shield that does absorbs one hit but usually riccochets you into a wall and you die anyway or you over compensate and still die. No life bar, just two hits. Its arcade style, 3 lives, game over, no continues, restart, no feeling of progression. Aside from graphical upgrades (original was done in old vector graphics, like Defender and Asteroids cabinets) this plays exactly like the origial. Galaxy map, beacons and reactors, punishing difficulty.
Could have really done well with a career mode with upgrades, story based levels and different ships. Feels like a missed opportunity here. Good news, it was only $10, so its fine for a mindless game to play.
