Withering Rooms

This game is like if Luigi's Mansion got remade as Silent Hill meets Dark Souls. It's sort of a metroidvania with rogue-like elements, but your progress never resets as you're constantly unlocking new items, leveling up, and accessing new parts of the mansion. Exploration is fun, combat is challenging, and the story is great. It's definitely worth the price, too, because this game is LONG, and from what I've read, there's NG+. Ultimately, I cannot recommend this game enough. Such a delightful sleeper hit.

Absolutely blown away. A fascinating and unique story, somehow able to mix survival horror, Soulslike combat and leveling, Metroidvania-esque progression, and actually GOOD roguelike touches into an absolute masterpiece. This game is clearly the work of someone who truly knows those genres and can transmute them all into a one of a kind game. I cannot praise it enough.

At first glance this struck me as another weird janky asset-flip on the microsoft store, but that couldn't be further from the truth. As charming as it is punishing; Withering Rooms isn't going to be for everyone. What will make or break this for you is the combat. You'll find melee and ranged weapons, at base level your attacks are sluggish and require you to position yourself efficiently to avoid damage. You have a backstep and dodge-roll, it all feels sorta like "Salt & Sanctuary" minus the verticality. There are tons of rings and clothing that you can combine into different builds, from the regular stuff like boosting base stats/resistances to more interesting things that change the way you play significantly- and by extension afford you more freedom/efficiency in combat. Great stuff, and the price is a steal.

This game is PHENOMENAL! The way they've combined so many different elements from different genres and it works. It's a metroidvania souls-like horror game. The combat is fun, the story is EPIC and the music adds a creepy atmosphere to the experience. I need this developer to make all the money to create more gems like this. Also, after starting new game+ and realizing that there's a whole new element and story to the game makes this game super replayable. Worth every penny!

I bought this on ps5 on a whim and it blew my mind. Saw it on sale here and had to double dip (also, you can't leave reviews on ps5 games in their marketplace). A brilliant mix of modern horror with old-school sensibilities. There's also a magical, almost indescribable quality to it that I can't explain, like it's hiding something equal parts sinister and wondrous.
