Book of Demons

Book of Demons is a simplified Diablo, and that's a good thing. Forget the annoying inventory system and pile of item drops that don't matter. Everything is streamlined and easy-to-use in this game. I enjoyed the campaign and gradual meta progression. It wasn't difficult, but it was fun. The real treat of Book of Demons is the optional roguelite mode. It mixes things up just enough to made each new run interesting. Love the storybook artstyle, too. The biggest downside is that you can lose track of who you're attacking in large fights, but it never got so bad that I would knock this down to a 4 from a 5. Try this game now if you like Diablo and/or roguelites!

3 classes, 12ish hour long campaign. Replay value in freeplay mode and roguelike mode.

Honestly this is the most fun I've had playing Diablo since 2001. If you're NewBeans and you didn't ever PLAY the original game, just D3 or Diablo 2, this is gonna bore you. No lie. But if you're a retro gamer who loves a good homage, this IS essentially a procedurally generated Roguelike POP UP PAPERBOOK of Diablo 1 with names like Pepin and Griswold and Gillian changed. It is adorable and fun, and even just funny as a concept.

Not sure why they didnt go with a hotkey system like Diablo. I felt like I couldn't use a ton of cards because all spells are mapped to Y and you have to switch between them with RB. This makes you focus on the cards at the bottom of the screen instead of enemies. This is not good when a lot of combat involves moving a cursor. The longer I play the more frustrating it becomes

Concept is really great and the game functions fine with no crashes for me. The limited characters isn't the problem with this game; it's the woefully bad balacning and controls. This game goes from boring to impossible; the more I played the less fun I had. In the first few hours it was charming but then the bad game design starts to come in to picture. Not being able to move your character is one of the least fun things in gaming and you have very limited control in this game. The game resorts to body blocking every steps and cheap kills with archers everywhere. There are a lot of "offscreening" moments where monsters can hit you but you can't even see them. The cursor is really bad at picking what I'm aiming at; on top of all this there are busy buttons that will have you using abilities you dont want. Overall I actually like a lot of ideas in the game (the flexscope is REALLY good and allows you to customize your game quite a bit). I bought this game for $2.00USD and it feels fair.
